EDUC/ENGR 391: ENGINEERING EDUCATION AND ONLINE LEARNING

This is a project-based class where we explore how to design effective web-based learning experiences using principles from learning theory and game design thinking. We get hands-on practice with various educational technologies, game design techniques, and assessment methods. Throughout the quarter, we work in interdisciplinary teams to create our own educational technology prototypes.

EDUC 200A: INTRODUCTION TO DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

One of the most significant advantages of prototyping is the ability to gather user feedback early in the design process. By presenting prototypes to potential users, designers can gain valuable insights into user preferences, pain points, and usability issues. This feedback is crucial for validating design assumptions and ensuring that the product meets user needs and expectations. Early user testing helps in refining the design, reducing the risk of costly changes later in the development process.

CS 377G: DESIGNING SERIOUS GAMES

This is a project-based course about designing "serious games"—games created to help people understand and care about complex social and environmental issues. We learn core game design principles through hands-on activities, lectures, and readings. Throughout the course, we actually designed and prototyped our own games aimed at promoting social change and civic engagement, focusing on real challenges faced by society today.

EDUC 333A: INTRODUCTION TO LEARNING SCIENCES

This course introduces us to key ideas in the learning sciences, focusing on how to study and improve learning by designing new educational environments, tools, and technologies. We discuss multiple perspectives, like cognitive, situative, sociocultural, developmental, and critical approaches, to better understand how and why people learn in real-world settings. Throughout the course, we analyze readings, learning environments, and emerging trends to deepen our understanding of effective learning design.

EDUC 229A: LEARNING DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR

This is a required, year-long seminar for our LDT master's program. We discuss and practice how to design effective learning experiences using technology, and we get ongoing support for our master's projects. It's a mix of theory and hands-on development, with plenty of collaboration along the way. In this quarter, we began working on our capstone project. We conducted interviews to identify a learning challenge and started building initial prototypes.
